About the Division of Gender Studies
The Division of Gender Studies is a dynamic division that has expanded and developed its research profile since 1978. It has played a central role at Lund University in moving gender analysis from the margins in most disciplines to the centre of social and cultural analysis.
From January 1, 2025 the subjects of Gender Studies, Social Anthropology and Sociology will be reorganized into a joint department. The decision is a part of the broader process of minimizing the number of departments at the faculty at large.
Gender Studies is an interdisciplinary department in the Faculty of Social Sciences at Lund University. We offer education from undergraduate to doctoral level. The department gives two bachelor's programmes in Gender Studies, a master’s program and a PhD program. Additionally, the division cooperates with the Faculty of Social Science Graduate School in three international Master’s Programmes: Development Studies, Global Studies and Social Studies of Gender. Research within the division is conducted within several fields and from a variety of theoretical perspectives. The Division of Gender Studies has also served as a central arena for the creation and institutionalisation of networks for researchers in the field of Gender Studies as well as for the interaction between the research community and civil society.
Teaching at the Division of Gender Studies is based on research and the academic staff are active in local, national and international research networks. The academic staff at the Division for Gender Studies includes leading scholars who have introduced the fields of postcolonial theory, Crip theory, queer theory and intersectionality into Swedish academic research. The Division has a long tradition and practice of cooperation over disciplinary borders, and is well connected to national and international networks and cooperation with an ability to develop, apply for and receive funding for research projects.
